HART Fieldbus – ICP DAS HART System Total Solution

Product Update 2014-07-21

The HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) protocol uses the Bell 202 Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) standard to superimpose digital communication signals on the 4-20 mA loop current shown as below figure. HART communicates at 1200 bps without interrupting and interference with the 4-20mA signal and allows a host application (master) to send/receive digital information from a smart field device. The 4-20mA signal communicates the primary measured value - the fastest and most reliable industry standard. The digital signal can be used for additional device information including device status, diagnostics, additional measured or calculated values, etc. Therefore, the HART communication including analog and digital information provides a low-cost and very robust complete field communication solution that is easy to use and configure. Therefore, HART technique has been widely used in many large-scale industry control environment. For example, the MOL Group’s Danube Refinery, Appleton Paper, the largest U.S. co-generation facility, and the Mitsubishi Chemical plant in Japan.

ICP DAS has been involved in in-depth researches on the HART bus technology for years. The HART products have been developed by ICP DAS including HART converter, HART gateway and HART I/O modules. Therefore, by using ICP DAS HART products, users can easily and quickly integrate HART devices and complete the data acquisition to SCADA, HMI or PLC system.
(1) HART Converter:
The HART converter can be used to access HART device information or configuration via COM, USB or Ethernet interface. Besides we also provide HART to Fiber converter to expand the HART communication distance and HART to Analog converter with loop monitor function.
(2) HART Gateway:
The HART gateway can integrate HART communication to different protocol network like Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, PROFIBUS etc.
(3) HART I/O Module:
The HART I/O module can access analog current signal and digital device information.

ICP DAS HART Converter Application:
(1) Free Software Tool : (HC_Tool)

The HC_Tool is provided by ICP DAS for free. First, the users can execute the “Search” function to scan all the HART devices in the HART network and then can easily and quickly choose specific HART device for data access or configuration. Besides, the HART data logging and HART data analysis are also provided.

(2) Support HART OPC Server :
HART Communication Foundation, called HCF, is the standard development and support organization for the HART communication protocol. They provide the HART OPC Server for 30 day trial. Users can use the HART OPC server to integrate HART device information to SCADA or third-party program easily and quickly.

(3) Support FDT (Field Device Tool) Software :
FDT, called Field Device Tool, standardizes the communication and configuration interface between all field devices and host systems. Now ABB, E+H, Siemens and YOKOGAWA etc. companies all support FDT technique for their field devices. The benefits of FDT are platform independence, fieldbus independence, ensured technology migration etc. However, ICP DAS converters like I-7547 / I-7567 / I-7570 all support FDT software. Therefore, users can use ICP DAS converters to integrate HART device information to FDT software easily and quickly.

Free Tool HG_Tool PH_Tool

ICP DAS HART Gateway Application:

(1) Free Software Tool : (HG_Tool / PH_Tool)
The HG_Tool or PH_Tool are provided by ICP DAS for free. By using the tool, users can integrate HART device information to Modbus address or PROFIBUS network easily and quickly. Besides, it also provides HART communication error detection to make sure the HART network communication work well. The below describes the simple steps to integrate HART information with SCADA system by HG_Tool via HRT-710.
[1] Add HART device to HRT-710 (according to HART device address).

[2] Make sure the correct HART device information is collected to HRT-710.

[3] Get the HART device command 3 data from Modbus address 30001.

(2) WasteWater Application : (E+H HART FlowMeter)
[1] Original System: The FDT software is used to collect and configure these HART devices information in the host.
[2] Expanded Function: Integrate these HART devices information to SCDAS system through Modbus RTU communication simultaneously.
We suggest HRT-710 is suitable in the situation and the result is satisfactory.

(3) Integrate HART communication device with RS-232 hardware interface: (MCU900)
Request : The user wants to integrate HART communication device (Flowmeter, Mobrey MCU900) with RS-232 hardware interface.
Solution : We suggest the user to use HRT-710 and I-7570 to implement the requirements and the wiring for this case is as below.

ICP DAS HART I/O Module Application:

(1) Gas Pressure Detection System:
In general, the process of the natural gas transported to households requires long-distance pipelines. The gas pressure in the pipelines will be reduced gradually from high to medium until low. If a gas pipeline ruptures without being perceived , it may cause great loss of company or even causes serious disasters. So the most important mission for gas transportation system is strict control of the gas pipeline pressure. The gas company uses HART bus manometer for stable measurement and easy maintenance. The XPAC-8000 controller and I-87H17W with eight HART AI channels are used to collect these HART manometers data quickly and easily. Through Ethernet, the control center can monitor all gas pipeline pressure remotely.
